A patient with ascites can be a diagnostic challenge. If it is a dog, and it is aged, right heart failure must be rule out. If it is a cat and it is older than 10 years, then carcinomatosis is very likely. This lecture will provide not only an algorithm to increase the diagnostic accuracy for patients with ascites but also technical tricks and pathophysiological knowledge to help to understand how to diagnose, for example, portal hypertension and check for secondary extra-hepatic shunts.
